Sun Allergy: Calcium As A Solution?

When exposed to strong sunlight, those affected often suffer from rashes and inflammation, sometimes also from headaches. Is calcium a good solution for sun allergies? Practice vita reveals.

Millions of Germans have already booked their vacation – and many of them already know from experience that they will have to suffer in the first few days at the sunny holiday resort. Sensitive people react allergically to the unusually high dose of sun rays – itchy, burning nodules and pustules appear on the skin. “When they come into contact with long-wave UVA rays, the skin cells release the tissue hormone histamine, which triggers the unpleasant inflammation,” explains Dr. Birgit Kunze. The Hamburg dermatologist: “The mineral calcium can block the itching histamine. Anyone who takes calcium four to five weeks before a vacation against the sun allergy can protect themselves.”

Sun allergy: Calcium and vitamin D help

According to the expert, without vitamin D, the body cannot store the calcium for sun allergy for long. More than 80 percent of a pure calcium tablet is excreted within a few hours via the kidneys and bladder. Studies have also shown that every second otherwise healthy adult has too little vitamin D (found in tuna, veal, eggs, and milk!) in their blood. If you want to take calcium as a preventive measure against sun allergy, you should therefore take a preparation with both vital substances. Advantage: Such a combination also protects against the dreaded bone decalcification.
