These Foods Should Not Be Kept In The Refrigerator

That doesn’t belong in the fridge

While many foods can be kept in the refrigerator for longer periods of time, the opposite is true for some foods. Some types of fruit and vegetables in particular do not tolerate being in the refrigerator.

  1. Potatoes, for example, should be stored in a cool and dark place, but the cold in the refrigerator is then too much of a good thing. The cold changes the taste of the potatoes, making them uncomfortably sweet because the potato starch turns into sugar.
  2. With other foods, the maturing process is interrupted by the temperature in the refrigerator and they not only lose their taste, but also valuable nutrients. This includes avocados as well as tomatoes and bananas. The same applies to most types of pome and stone fruit, such as nectarines, peaches or kiwis.
  3. The maturing process is interrupted for bread and coffee in the refrigerator, but this storage tip, which is still often heard, is not the best either. The bread does not stay fresh longer but dries out much faster than in a corresponding bread container and the coffee loses its aroma in the refrigerator.
  4. Some foods rot much faster when stored in the refrigerator. These include, above all, very water-heavy foods, such as cucumbers. But even onions and carrots are not immune to this fate.
  5. Tip: A dry, dark, and cool pantry is a better place to store many foods than the refrigerator, which is clearly too cold.
