Tomatoes On The Vine – Particularly Aromatic

The tomato is an annual fruit vegetable that botanically belongs to the nightshade family. Although this name does not imply it, tomato plants need a lot of sun and warmth to produce ripe and aromatic fruit. Vine tomatoes are fruits that have ripened directly on the vine and are picked with the vine. Special breeds are required for this particular harvesting method. The yield with this harvesting method is significantly lower than with other varieties.

Origin

The tomato plant originated in the Peruvian Andes, where it is still found wild today. It was Columbus who brought the tomato to Europe.

Season

In Germany, the tomato season runs from June to November. Due to the great popularity of the tomato, you can get fresh produce all year round.

Taste

Vine tomatoes have a unique aromatic-sweet taste that makes them particularly popular. Due to the panicle, they retain their strong tomato aroma over a longer period of time.

Use

Due to their strong taste, vine tomatoes are particularly suitable as raw vegetables. The bright red color of the vine tomatoes makes every fresh salad shine. But they also unfold their delicious aroma when cooking, grilling or gratinating.

Storage

Fresh vine tomatoes love air and shade. The temperature should by no means be too low, 16 °C is optimal for vine tomatoes. Tomatoes often lose their aroma and become bland in the refrigerator. So if you want to enjoy the full taste, treat your tomatoes to room temperature. Too much light and too much heat reduces the nutrient content. Tomatoes should therefore always be eaten within a week. Ethylene is also an important factor for storage. It is a natural plant hormone that is released in gaseous form during the ripening process of tomatoes. It is therefore best to always store vine tomatoes separately from other vegetables and fruit.
