Valerian Side Effects You Should Know

You can buy valerian in many different forms at the pharmacy. However, you should know its side effects, even if the plant is best known for its positive effects. Find out everything you need to know in the article.

Valerian and its side effects

Valerian, which is often taken as a tea, tablet, capsule, or drop form, can have side effects despite its positive and calming effects.

  • Taking valerian can cause gastrointestinal problems. This can cause abdominal cramps or nausea. Symptoms such as headaches, itching, or dizziness can also occur.
  • Valepotriates are contained in valerian. These are considered potentially carcinogenic. However, as a rule, they are not or hardly present if, for example, a tea is made from valerian.
  • To be on the safe side, you can use ready-made preparations or ready-made tea. In Germany, valepotriates are not contained in finished products or only in small amounts.
  • Sometimes drowsiness occurs after taking valerian. So you should better avoid driving and the like if you have taken valerian. If you use valerian to calm you down and to help you fall asleep, you are sure to want this effect.
  • NOTE: If you experience severe side effects after taking valerian and you feel uncomfortable with it, please consult a doctor. You can ask a pharmacy for advice on how to use it correctly.
