Washing rice before cooking is important for several reasons. Among other things, the natural product rice can contain impurities that should be rinsed out before cooking.
Wash rice: you should consider this before preparing it
Any dirt can be removed by thorough washing.
- Fine dust is mainly found in white rice, which is also called polished rice. Although this is not harmful to health, it makes the rice sticky.
- Before you cook rice, you should wash it thoroughly under cold water. On the one hand, you remove the fine polishing dust and on the other hand, you wash out starch at the same time. The rice does not become sticky but remains fluffy and grainy.
- However, there are also rice dishes that require sticky rice. These include special types of rice for risotto, paella, and rice pudding. You do not need to wash this rice, as the starch is needed for these dishes in order to maintain the sticky properties.
- Good to know: You should not rinse cooked rice with cold water, otherwise you will lose the nutrients, minerals, and vitamins contained in the rice.
Rinse rice under water: This is how it works
Thorough washing removes impurities and excess starch.
- Before cooking, place the rice in a large bowl and cover it well with water.
- Stir the rice in the water with your hands. You will notice that the water is cloudy. This is excess starch.
- Drain the rice in a sieve. Draining is even easier with a rice bowl.
- Repeat the washing process until the water runs clear.
- Tip: Before the actual preparation, you can also soak the clean rice.
