Water Consumption Dishwasher: Per Year & Per Wash Cycle

The water consumption of dishwashers

With the first dishwashers in the 1960s, there was no talk of economical energy and water consumption. Accordingly, the dishwashers consumed around 50 liters of water per wash cycle. Today, saving water and energy is one of the most important criteria when buying a new dishwasher.

  • The first step towards saving energy was changing the mandatory information. Since the late 1990s, the power consumption of every dishwasher has had to be specified.
  • Since 2011, water consumption has also had to be noted on the energy label. Manufacturers are obliged to state the water consumption of the dishwasher for the entire year. Annual figures are given for water consumption, based on 280 flushing processes.
  • However, many manufacturers of dishwashers also specify the water consumption per wash cycle.
  • On average, you have to reckon with water consumption of around 13 liters per wash cycle. Depending on the dishwasher, consumption varies between 7 and 16 liters per use.
  • If you do not have any data for your dishwasher at hand, you can also have the approximate water consumption of your dishwasher calculated.
