A diet is not what the term is most commonly used for these days. There’s a lot more to it than just trying to lose weight. What is actually behind it is derived from the Greek word diata and is very interesting to know.
What a diet actually is
For some, dieting is associated with positive feelings, for others with pressure or even panic. This is basically a completely neutral term.
- The word “diet” comes from the Greek word “diata”. Translated, this means something like “lifestyle, way of life or (life) order.”
- Today, most associate the term with abstinence, shakes, eating habits, hunger, or even weight loss. This picture has little to do with the actual meaning behind it.
- Actually, the point of a diet is that it is sustainable; it should therefore represent a long-term diet. However, today’s (trend) diets are mostly about losing as much weight as possible in the shortest possible time, so that a yo-yo effect is not uncommon.
- In the medical sense, a diet also means a form of nutrition that deviates in any way from “normal”. The goal is usually weight reduction for health reasons or a shift in the ratio of macronutrients in the diet.
Known forms of a diet
Today there are many different diets that almost everyone is familiar with. It is important to choose a form that is good for you in the long term and promotes your health. The following diets are used very frequently.
- The so-called protein diet is about supplying the body with as much protein and protein as possible throughout the day. This form is ideal, for example, if you want to build muscle quickly. The main foods eaten are eggs, vegetables, lean meat, legumes and dairy products.
- The aim of the metabolic diet is to only eat foods that stimulate the metabolism. Only three meals a day are eaten. The menu mainly consists of lean meat, eggs, low-fat quark and low-carbohydrate fruit and vegetables.
- The low-carb diet aims to eat as few carbohydrates as possible. The menu includes meat, fish, vegetables and fruit, fatty foods such as avocados, nuts, seeds and high-quality oils, but also legumes and dairy products.
- If you follow the Paleo diet, try to eat every food in its original form, i.e. unprocessed. For example, meat, fish, local vegetables and fruit, nuts and seeds, unsweetened dried fruit and eggs are eaten.
- In order to lose weight in the shortest possible time, many stars use lightning or crash diets. While it’s getting a lot of coverage and the actors, singers and entertainers posing in their gorgeous new bodies, you should exercise caution. These forms of dieting are harmful to health in that they cause ravenous hunger and insufficient supplies.
- Medical diets are prescribed by the doctor. In the context of various diseases, it may become necessary for you to follow a certain diet for a certain period of time. Depending on the form, you can be accompanied professionally. This is done by a nutrition counseling center. If prescribed by a doctor, the costs are usually borne by the health insurance company.
