What Is the Difference Between Grapefruit and Pomelo?

Botanically speaking, grapefruit and pomelo are two different species. It is often wrongly assumed that these are just different names for one and the same fruit. This could be related to the fact that in English the grapefruit is called “pomelo”, while in French the same term is used for the grapefruit. In Spanish, “pomelo” is actually a collective term for both citrus fruits.

The grapefruit is a separate species, while the grapefruit is considered a hybrid of oranges and grapefruit. Like most citrus fruits, pomelo and grapefruit are high in vitamin C, which primarily helps the body keep the immune system functioning.

Originally from Southeast Asia, the pomelo has a flattened, often slightly pear-like shape. The peel of the citrus fruit is yellow or yellow-green, the flesh is pink, red, pink, pale yellowish or greenish-yellow, depending on the variety. As with most citrus fruits, it is divided into individual segments. The grapefruit tastes sweet and sour with a slightly bitter note. Some grapefruit varieties can form very large fruits that can reach a diameter of up to 30 centimeters. In Germany, real grapefruits are rarely sold, and the fruits that are incorrectly referred to as grapefruits are in fact grapefruits. The grapefruit or pomelo is considered an important fruit for the Chinese New Year celebrations. For the German market, the grapefruits or pomelos mostly come from imports from China.

The fruits of the grapefruit are characterized by a round shape with a pink or yellowish skin. Grapefruits are usually much smaller than pomelos. Their flesh is pink, yellow, or red. In terms of taste, grapefruits vary between the milder pink varieties and the intensely bitter yellow and red fruits. The grapefruit is said to have been cultivated as early as the 18th century. Enjoy them, for example, as grapefruit juice mixed with some lychee juice.
