That’s why wheat bran is so healthy

Wheat bran is the sifted out residue of the wheat grain that results from the production of flour. This includes the peel, the seedling and the aleurone layer. Bran used to be considered a by-product and was mainly used as animal feed. Today we know that wheat bran is a real superfood.

  • Wheat bran is packed with fiber. These have a positive effect on intestinal activity and thus support our digestion. So if you eat wheat bran regularly, you are doing something for your intestinal health and preventing constipation.
  • The fiber contained in wheat bran contains hardly any calories. Nevertheless, they ensure a long-lasting feeling of satiety and can therefore also help with weight loss.
  • According to a study, dietary fiber should even reduce the risk of colon cancer. Since wheat bran is particularly rich in dietary fiber, you can provide your body with the optimal amount of it by consuming it regularly.
  • Most of the vitamins and minerals are found in the husk and seedling of the grain. That’s why wheat bran is full of iron, zinc, copper, manganese, phosphorus, magnesium and B vitamins.

So you can use wheat bran

The health benefits of wheat bran are obvious. But many people do not know how the superfood can be used in the kitchen. We give you some tips on how to use it.

  • Conventional flour can be partially replaced with wheat bran when baking. For example, when baking bread, swap about 10 percent of the flour for bran. This not only makes the bread healthier, but also particularly juicy. Other baked goods such as cakes or waffles can also be prepared in this way.
  • Bran also tastes good in muesli. Just add a tablespoon or two to the cereal bowl. You can also stir the bran into yoghurt or soy yoghurt or use it to refine your smoothie.
  • The Scottish breakfast classic porridge can also be supplemented with wheat bran. Simply swap some of the oatmeal for bran. This also works with overnight oats.
