The history of the currywurst
The currywurst was invented by the restaurateur Herta Heuwer in Berlin after the Second World War. For the first time, she prepared a fried sausage with the typical currywurst sauce and sold it in her snack bar in the summer of 1949. However, Heuer cannot claim to be the only one responsible for the development of the currywurst. The first currywurst was probably created in cooperation with Max Brückner and Frank Friedrich and their company “Maximilian”. They developed the manufacturing process for the bratwurst without casing. Since natural casings were in short supply after the Second World War, the currywurst probably only became so popular thanks to Brückner’s new invention.
- Currywurst is prepared differently from region to region. Even the Volkswagen canteens have their own recipe.
- The fruity, fiery sausage is also available as a ready meal, which is heated in a microwave.
- There are even companies that have specialized in the production of currywurst. For example, the “Best Worst In Town” franchise chain in its more than ten branches offers nine different curry sauces with eight different degrees of spiciness for three different types of sausage.
