Whole egg powder has a very long shelf life
Whole egg powder is made from pasteurized, spray-dried eggs. Egg powder is not for everyone, but it does have one major advantage: it is one of the foods with an extremely long shelf life.
- An unopened package of whole egg powder has a shelf life of between five and ten years. Once the pack has been opened, it should be used within a year.
- Egg powder, therefore, has a significantly longer shelf life than fresh eggs, which can usually be eaten for between four and six weeks.
- Storage does not affect the shelf life. You can store the whole egg powder in the cupboard. There is no need to put the powder in the fridge.
How to mix whole egg powder
Since the egg powder is very cheap, some hotel kitchens use it to prepare egg dishes such as scrambled eggs. Whole egg powder used to be the food of choice to supply the military during the war.
- Due to its long shelf life, whole egg powder is suitable as a reserve for emergencies. The taste of the egg powder is controversial.
- If you want to use egg powder to replace a fresh egg, you have to mix it with water. A portion of whole egg powder contains three times the amount of water.
- 12 grams of the powder together with 36 grams of water correspond to one egg. If you want to use the egg powder when baking, first mix it with the other dry ingredients before stirring in the water.
