An old German recipe

Place the water, pearl barley, cinnamon, and lemon in a pan over low heat and simmer gently for about 45 minutes. Add the prunes and raisins and simmer for another 15 minutes. Add the red and white wine. Alternatively, you can use two bottles of red wine, perhaps a little rum, beat in three whole eggs, and season with sugar. Serve with cooked ham and buttered white bread on a separate serving board, or with ham and “stoved” potatoes (thickened potatoes).
