Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 6 m.-large chicory
  • 6 slices of cooked ham
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 600 ml milk
  • 200 g cheese, grated
  • some nutmeg, if necessary
  • salt and pepper

Instructions

Working time approx. 30 minutes; Cooking/baking time approx. 55 minutes; Total time approx. 1 hour 25 minutes

Cook the chicory for 5-10 minutes and drain well. In the meantime, melt the butter in a saucepan. Add the flour and mix well with the melted butter. Pour in a little of the milk and stir until smooth. Pour in the remaining milk, stirring constantly. Stir 100g of the cheese into the milk mixture and mix well again. Season the sauce with salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Simmer for a few minutes and then remove from the heat. Wrap each chicory in a slice of ham and place in a baking dish. Pour the sauce evenly over the vegetables. Finally, sprinkle the remaining cheese over the casserole and place the dish in a preheated oven at 180°C (top/bottom heat) for about 45 minutes. Serve hot.
