Ingredients for 1 servings:

  • 4 onions, total 425 g
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar, total 30 g
  • 100 ml apple cider vinegar
  • 200 ml water
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 carnation(s)
  • 2 tsp salt
  • pepper

Peel the onions and dice them fairly finely. Place the sugar in a heavy-bottomed saucepan and melt over medium heat without stirring. When the sugar begins to turn a light brown, add the diced onions and allow them to brown slightly, stirring constantly. Then pour in the apple cider vinegar and water, add salt, pepper, cloves, and bay leaves, and simmer gently for about 1 hour. The onion relish is ready when the liquid has almost completely evaporated.
