Do I have to pluck lamb’s lettuce when preparing it? It is always very tedious to remove all the roots one by one. Or can I eat them without hesitation?
Cleaning lamb’s lettuce is actually a bit time-consuming. The recommendation to cut off root ends is that it is often difficult to get them completely clean. Otherwise, some sand or soil could remain in the lettuce. Otherwise it is not a problem to eat the roots.
For the preparation of lamb’s lettuce we recommend the following:
- It is best to wash the bundles of lamb’s lettuce several times in cold water to remove the sand as much as possible.
- Drain the lamb’s lettuce in a colander or spin dry in a salad spinner – but not “in turbo mode”, as the tender leaves could otherwise be crushed.
- Remove wilted lamb’s lettuce leaves.
- Cut off or pluck off any existing root ends or, if they are completely clean, they can be used.
- Halve large clumps if you like.
