Oil The Worktop – That’s How it Works

Oiling a new countertop: that’s what you need

Solid wood worktops look good and add a rustic feel to your kitchen. Treat new plates with oil to increase their strength and durability. They often look better too.

  • Depending on the type of wood, some manufacturers offer special oils that can be used to treat the board. However, there are also a number of universal oils that are suitable for indoor use. These include linseed oil, walnut oil, and hard oil. Hard oil is particularly suitable for the first treatment, as it penetrates the wood well and hardens after drying. Edible oils, such as olive oil, can in principle also be used, but since they do not dry, they are less suitable.
  • Before the first treatment, clean the worktop with a damp cloth and let it dry. Before applying, there should be no dirt or grease left on the plate.
  • When wiping a fresh record with water, you may notice that certain spots will always dry faster than others. This is because they have a different absorbency. You can even this out with special base oil that you apply to these areas. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Oiling the worktop: this is how it works

To treat the plate you need a brush and a cotton cloth in addition to the oil.

  1. Stir the hard oil thoroughly so that all the ingredients mix well.
  2. Apply the oil evenly to the slab with the brush in the direction of the grain.
  3. Allow the plate to dry for 15 minutes.
  4. Use the rag to remove the excess oil that has not yet penetrated.
  5. Repeat the process. Depending on the type of wood, you can coat the panel two to four times before the material is saturated. If you apply new oil later, you won’t need as much.
