Peel turmeric – this is how it works

Turmeric is a healthy spice. However, you do not necessarily have to resort to the much more well-known powder. You can also buy the root whole.

  • In principle, the peel of the turmeric root is edible. Just as you can eat potatoes with their skins on, so can turmeric root.
  • However, the peel contains many bitter substances. These bitter substances pass into the food when it is cooked. That’s not to everyone’s taste. For this reason, turmeric is usually peeled before further processing.
  • Be sure to wear gloves when peeling a turmeric root. The curcumin in the spice stains very strongly. You won’t be able to get rid of the resulting yellow color from your hands anytime soon.
  • The peel of the turmeric root is thin and can be removed quite easily. You can use a potato peeler, for example. However, the soft shell comes off just as easily with a spoon.
  • If you then want to use the peeled turmeric root as a spice, grate some of it into your food with a fine grater. A nutmeg grater is good for grating or grating.
