Parsley can be harmful to cats
Parsley is one of the healthiest herbs – at least for humans.
- However, some of the ingredients in parsley can be harmful to cats. The herbs contain oxalate. This ingredient is slightly toxic to cats.
However, it depends on the amount of parsley that the animal eats. A few leaves of parsley do not pose a risk to the cat’s health. - However, you should not feed your cat parsley. You should also make sure that the animal does not eat too much of it if you have plants in the garden or on the balcony.
- The oxalate in parsley promotes the formation of oxalate stones in the animal’s bladder.
Active ingredient apiol in parsley
Another ingredient in parsley that is problematic for cats is apiol.
- Apiol has a diuretic effect. If your cat eats a lot of parsley, it can quickly become dehydrated.
- Parsley seeds are particularly dangerous. Here the concentration of apiol is very high.
- If your cat eats parsley seeds, this can lead to symptoms of poisoning.
- Therefore, always keep plant seeds in a closed box or out of the reach of pets.
