When to Sow Dill and Parsley in May 2023: Useful Tips and Good Dates

Dill and parsley are rich in many vitamins and trace elements that are necessary for humans. In addition, fresh herbs are the perfect accompaniment to any dish, especially meat.

When you can sow dill in the ground

It is important to understand that dill and parsley are cold-resistant crops, so many gardeners start planting them as early as the beginning of April. However, with unstable weather, it is better not to do this, as frosts will lead to the death of the plants. The optimal time for planting greens is April-May.

Once planting has begun, plant dill regularly at regular intervals, e.g. every 15-20 days. Adhering to this technique will give you regular access to fresh herbs throughout the summer.

When to plant dill in the open ground according to the lunar calendar

Experienced gardeners know that it is imperative to pay attention to the phase of the moon. The best time – is the rising moon, and the worst – is the full moon and new moon. The waning moon is considered a neutral period.

  • Favorable days for planting dill in May 2023: 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 15.
  • Unfavorable days for planting dill in May 2023: 16, 17, 18, 21, 22, 25, 26, 30.

All other days in the month can be considered neutral, that is, quite acceptable for planting dill.

Where to plant dill in the garden

Dill and parsley need a well-lit area of soil, in the shadow, they will not develop. Moreover, the lack of light will also affect the taste qualities of greens. That’s why we recommend choosing beds far from bushes and trees but under direct sunlight.

Remember that dill and parsley do not like excessive moisture, so do not plant these crops next to plants that require regular watering. Also, follow two rules:

  • After celery, carrots, parsley, and dill, dill should not be planted;
  • After eggplants, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and garlic, dill can be planted.

2-3 weeks before planting dill, recultivate the soil and apply fertilizer, and 2-3 days before planting, loosen the soil with a rake and water abundantly. During planting, make furrows 1-2 cm deep, and 15-20 cm apart. The distance between the seeds should be at least 1-2 cm, otherwise, the plants will “compete” with each other and develop poorly.

A useful tip: Soak the seeds in warm water for a day before planting, and change the water 5-6 times within 24 hours. This way you will be able to rid the plant of essential oils, which prevent the dill from germinating.
