Fried ground beef: shelf life

Whether spaghetti bolognese, chili con carne, or meatloaf: Fried minced meat is used in the kitchen for many different dishes. It is therefore important to know the shelf life of the product.

  • Fresh Ground Beef: As with all refrigerated products, care should be taken to keep the cold chain intact. Especially in summer, it is advisable to take a cool bag with you when you go shopping. Pack the fresh ground beef straight into the fridge (at 2°C to 4°C) as soon as you get home. Use it within 6 to 8 hours at best and after 24 hours at the latest. If you freeze the minced meat, it can be kept for up to 3 months at a minimum of -18 °C.
  • Seared Ground Beef: Be sure to sear the meat well to eliminate any potential pathogens. If some of the fried ground beef is left, you can refrigerate it for 2 days. It can be stored in the freezer (min. -18°C) for up to 3 months.
  • Health Consequences: The Federal Center for Health reports that minced meat is one of the “most common triggers of food-borne illnesses.” Reasons for this are interruptions in the cold chain, insufficient heating or hygiene during preparation, and incorrect storage.
  • Tips for the correct handling of minced meat: use a cool bag when shopping, put the minced meat in the fridge as soon as possible, ensure sufficient hygiene during preparation, use it up quickly enough, or freeze it.
