Cake pops are very trendy and with a bit of skill, you can easily make the new type of pastry yourself. In this home article, we will show you how to do it and what you should consider when preparing it.

What are cake pops and how do you make them?

Cake pops are small colorful balls on a stick, also called cake lollipops. Not only are they conveniently portioned, but they are also a real eye-catcher at a party.

  1. Since cake pops are made from cake batter, you can choose any cake you like and prepare the basic recipe. Marble cakes, lemon cakes, chocolate cakes, and other dry cakes are particularly suitable. A corresponding recipe can be found here, for example. For a mold with 20 cake pops, however, a quarter of the cake batter is sufficient.
  2. Prepare the recipe and then fill the dough into a suitable form, into a cake pop maker, or roll small balls by hand.
  3. Unless you have decided to use the Cake Pop Maker to prepare the cake, you should place the balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. The same goes for the shape. You have to fill the dough into the side without a hole in the bottom and close the other side with a perfect fit.
  4. Then bake the cake pops in a preheated oven at 175 degrees for around 20 minutes. Adjust temperature and time based on recipe and oven. However, keep in mind that you cannot base this on the baking time of the original cake, as the balls are ready much faster due to their size. Be sure to do the chopsticks test.
  5. Then the balls have to cool down. Meanwhile, you can already melt the chocolate. You then dip a wooden stick into the liquid chocolate and then insert it into the ball.
  6. When the cake has cooled, you can carefully dip the whole cake pop into the chocolate and then decorate it straight away.

How to make the perfect cake pops – tips and tricks

For cake pops, you usually not only need a lot of time, but also a lot of patience and sensitivity. With a few tips and tricks, you can avoid the most common mistakes in the preparation.

  • You should never make the balls too big, otherwise, they won’t stick to the stick. It is, therefore, better to form small balls – walnut size is perfect here.
  • If you pour the cake pops into a mold, you should shake it again briefly after filling. As a result, the dough spreads better in the mold and you then have fewer cavities in the dough. This is important for the cake pops to hold together.
  • Let the balls harden first before you venture to the next step. For example, put them in the fridge for a while or briefly in the freezer. This gives the cake pops more grip in their raw form.
  • Use the chocolate as a kind of glue between the stick and the ball. Therefore, make sure that the handle and the chocolate get really firm before you dare to dip the ball.
  • So that the cake pops can stand up completely decorated, you should buy a suitable stand or make one yourself. You can do this, for example, by filling a large glass with sand and simply inserting the stems.
