Coffee during pregnancy: is it healthy?
- Unlike nicotine, you don’t have to forego caffeine during pregnancy. However, you should not consume more than 200 mg to 300 mg of caffeine per day.
- 200 mg of caffeine corresponds to about two cups of coffee.
- If you regularly exceed this limit, the likelihood of miscarriage increases or your baby could be born underweight.
How much caffeine is in what?
However, giving up coffee alone will not be enough. You have to factor in your total caffeine consumption for a day. Many foods also contain caffeine.
- Filter coffee (140 mg) has more caffeine than instant coffee (100 mg).
- Chocolate contains about 50 mg. In milk chocolate, however, a little less.
- Tea also contains over 50 mg of caffeine.
- In addition, cola contains about 40 mg of caffeine.
Which caffeine traps you should avoid
- Energy drinks of all kinds are completely discouraged during pregnancy.
- Depending on the manufacturer, an espresso can contain up to 300 mg of caffeine. So you don’t have to leave it out, but you should definitely deal with your variety.
- Caffeine can even be found in some medications. Talk to your pharmacist about this before you take it.
