Decaffeinating coffee: A time-consuming process
- Decaffeinated coffee is not completely caffeine-free, but it may only have a caffeine content of 0.1 percent. There are several methods by which coffee is decaffeinated.
- 100 years ago, coffee was soaked in salt water to decaffeinate and then treated with benzene. Since benzene is highly carcinogenic, this method is no longer used today.
- Decaffeination has become much healthier over the years, but the effort is still very high today. Coffee is not so easy to decaffeinate in the kitchen at home.
