Ingredients for 6 servings:
- 1 white cabbage
- 2 tsp lard (more if needed)
- 1 jar apple compote, alternatively applesauce
- 1 tsp caraway seeds
- 3 pinches of salt
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 2 tbsp vinegar
- 1 bay leaf
Instructions
Working time approx. 30 minutes; Total time approx. 30 minutes
(white cabbage)
Halve the white cabbage. Grate or chop half of it finely. Melt the lard in a saucepan. Add the cabbage and sauté until browned. Meanwhile, add the salt, sugar, and vinegar to the pan. Stir frequently and brown on high. Then add the caraway seeds, bay leaf, and apple compote to the cabbage. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 45-60 minutes until soft, stirring occasionally. Season to taste and add more salt if desired. This goes well with delicious cabbage rolls (use the remaining half of the cabbage), meat rolls, and boiled potatoes, among other dishes.
