Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 8 fish fillets (matjes fillets)
  • 3 m.-sized onion(s)
  • 3 m.-sized apples
  • 125 g yogurt (cream yogurt)
  • 125 ml cream
  • 5 tbsp mayonnaise
  • pepper
  • Sugar
  • Allspice
  • possibly milk

Instructions

Working time approx. 15 minutes; Rest time approx. 12 hours; Total time approx. 12 hours 15 minutes

Prepare the day before!!!

Peel the apples and onions and dice them into small cubes. Add the mayonnaise, heavy cream, and yogurt and mix. Season with a pinch each of pepper, sugar, and allspice. Cover the herring fillets with the sauce and let them marinate overnight in the refrigerator. If the herring is too salty for you, you can soak it in milk for about 6 hours beforehand. Serve with boiled potatoes, beans, and bacon bits.
