With or without bacon. Here we have a simple version with salami.
Finely dice the onion and sauté with the bacon in a pan or shallow saucepan with a little oil. Add the 4-5 mm thick slices of Cabanossi or salami. Fry until the sausage is nicely browned – this gives it its spicy roasted flavor! Drain the beans in a sieve. Crush the tomatoes and add them to the pan with the bacon, onions, and sausage. Now add the beans. Adjust the liquid level with the tomato juice and simmer over medium heat until the ingredients are hot. Season with thyme, chili powder, pepper, paprika, and salt. If you like, you can add a generous dollop of sour cream to the bean pan before serving. Flatbread or white bread goes best with this dish. But for a more authentic experience, eat it straight from the pan with a wooden spoon!
