Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 500 ml milk
  • 100 g flour
  • 100 g sugar
  • ½ vanilla pod(s), the pulp, alternatively 1 sachet of vanilla sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 100 g breadcrumbs
  • 125 ml oil
  • possibly cinnamon and sugar

Working time approx. 30 minutes; Rest time approx. 8 hours; Total time approx. 8 hours 30 minutes

Melt the butter in a saucepan and pour in the milk. Add the sugar, flour, and vanilla pod. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly, then remove from the heat. Add 1 egg. Brush a shallow baking dish with a little oil and pour in the mixture. Refrigerate overnight. The next day, cut the mixture into square pieces, whisk the remaining egg in a bowl, toss the pieces in the oil, and coat with breadcrumbs. Heat the oil and fry the milk pieces until golden brown on both sides. Arrange on a large platter and serve sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar, if desired.
