American grilled hot dogs

Ingredients for 8 servings:

  • 8 sausages, hot dog sausages, preferably beef sausages
  • 8 buns (hot dog buns – in my recipe list)
  • e.g. mustard
  • e.g. ketchup
  • 1 large onion(s), very finely chopped
  • 375 ml apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp coriander seeds
  • 2 tbsp white sugar
  • 8 large cucumber(s), dill, finely chopped
  • 1 small red bell pepper(s), grilled, skin removed, cleaned and finely chopped
  • 1 small onion(s), finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp fresh dill, chopped
  • Salt
  • black pepper

Instructions

Working time approx. 15 minutes; Rest time approx. 1 hour; Cooking/baking time approx. 45 minutes; Total time approx. 2 hours

the sausages are grilled

For the relish, bring the vinegar, mustard seeds, and coriander seeds to a boil in a saucepan on the stovetop. Simmer until the liquid has reduced by half and is slightly syrupy. Remove from the heat and add the other ingredients, stir gently, season with salt and pepper, and pour into a plastic container. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Prepare the grill. Grill the hot dog sausages on all sides until browned. Cut open the hot dog buns, spread with mustard and ketchup, then place the sausages on the buns and top with the onions and relish, if desired. Fold the buns and enjoy.
