A childhood delicacy fried in lard

Sift the flour with baking powder and starch together with sugar, salt, margarine, eggs, and milk to form a smooth dough. Roll out the dough to about ½ cm thick and cut or roll into rectangles. Cut a slit lengthwise down the center of each piece of dough and pull one short side of the rectangle through. Fry in hot lard until golden brown and, once drained, sprinkle with sugar. Or make a glaze from powdered sugar and lemon juice and brush it over the pastry. We loved this pastry as children. I always had to bring some for my classmates when my mother baked. She made the cakes by the bowlful.
