Are Mushrooms Healthy? That’s What Matters!

Mushrooms are an absolute classic in the kitchen. But are mushrooms healthy? That’s what matters.

Are mushrooms healthy?

Mushrooms are an integral part of the diet for many. No wonder, after all, they have their very own hearty taste and at the same time serve as a perfect meat substitute. But are mushrooms healthy or unhealthy? That’s what matters:

Mushrooms contain many nutrients

Mushrooms are ideal for a healthy diet because they have a high number of nutrients. Various B vitamins, vitamin D, and K can be found in cultivated mushrooms. The mushrooms also contain many minerals such as iron, copper, potassium, phosphorus, and selenium. They also consist largely of water and therefore contain hardly any calories.

Nutritional table at a glance (100 grams raw):

When are mushrooms unhealthy?

However, you should not eat too many uncooked mushrooms. A maximum of 100 grams of raw mushrooms should be the end of it. The reason for this is the substance again, which can be toxic in large quantities.

In addition, mushrooms are not tolerated by everyone: anyone who regularly suffers from digestive problems after eating them could have an intolerance.

Normally, however, mushrooms are healthy for most people when a few aspects are taken into account.

Buying mushrooms: note three characteristics

Whether you choose brown or white mushrooms, you should consider the following when buying:

  • Cap: The cap of the fresh mushroom is closed around the stalk or at most slightly open. If it has already opened wide, the mushrooms are no longer quite fresh.
  • Fins: The fins of the mushroom are light to medium brown. The darker they are, the older the mushroom is.
  • Skin: The skin of the mushroom should look plump and have no bruises. In addition, the mushrooms should be largely free of soil.

Storage of mushrooms: It should be cool

After purchase, it is best to keep mushrooms in the refrigerator. There the mushrooms can be stored in an opened paper bag. With plastic trays, you should open the cling film so the mushrooms don’t sweat.

The cultivated mushrooms remain fresh for a maximum of three days. Therefore, it is best to only buy them as needed.
