Baked Mashed Potatoes

You can use either waxy or floury potatoes. You will need a 1.5-liter casserole dish. Preheat the oven to 175 degrees C, using bottom heat if possible, or top/bottom heat if necessary. Bring the potatoes to a boil in lightly salted water in a large pot and simmer for 15 minutes, then drain the water. Place the potatoes in a large bowl and mash them, adding the milk and butter and mixing everything together. Add the cream cheese and onion and stir everything together with a wooden spoon. In a smaller bowl, beat the egg with a little of the potato mixture and then add it to the potato mixture. Season with salt and black pepper. Pour the mixture into the casserole or baking dish. Place the dish in the oven and bake the mashed potatoes for 1 hour; it should be lightly browned.
