Bananas against diarrhea – does that make sense?

If you eat bananas when you have diarrhea, you have a good chance of putting an end to diarrhea. The reason: the banana can cleanse the intestinal wall and thereby alleviate the typical diarrhea symptoms.

  • Bananas contain numerous pectins, i.e. roughage. These swell up in the intestine and can free it from pathogens.
  • Bananas are also healthy for diarrhea because they have high levels of magnesium and potassium. Since diarrhea quickly flushes important minerals out of the body, you can quickly replenish the mineral balance by eating bananas and at the same time do something good against the symptoms.
  • But not only bananas are rich in pectin substances. You can achieve a similar effect with apples and citrus fruits. Soft fruits, such as strawberries, are not recommended.
  • So bananas can help fight your diarrhea, but other fruits are also great for relieving symptoms.
  • If the symptoms persist for a longer period of time or there is no relief, you should consult a doctor.
