Bifteki in Metaxa cream sauce

Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 500 g minced beef
  • 3 onions
  • 2 tbsp mustard, hot
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • salt and pepper
  • 2 tsp oregano
  • 1 tsp spice mix (gyros spice)
  • 150 g feta cheese, cut into 4 pieces
  • 1 egg(s)
  • 2 tbsp clarified butter
  • 200 ml cream
  • 100 ml Metaxa
  • 1 tsp broth, clear, instant
  • 100 g feta cheese, crumbled
  • n. B. Sauce thickener

Instructions

Working time approx. 15 minutes; Cooking/baking time approx. 25 minutes; Total time approx. 40 minutes

Finely dice the onions. Mix the minced meat with the egg, mustard, tomato paste, and 2 onions. Season with oregano, gyro seasoning, salt, and pepper. Form the minced meat mixture into 4 equal-sized oval patties. Press a piece of feta cheese into each patty and enclose it with the minced meat. Heat the clarified butter in a pan. Brown the bifteki on all sides for about 5 minutes. Remove from the pan and place in a baking dish. Sauté the remaining diced onions, stir in 75 ml of water, Metaxa, and cream, bring to a boil, and season with broth. Thicken with a sauce thickener, if desired. Pour the sauce over the bifteki. Sprinkle with the crumbled feta cheese and bake for about 15 minutes at 200°C.
