Experts advise: Here’s why you should try mock fasting

Sounds doable, actually: Cut your calorie intake in half for five days and avoid certain foods. For sustainable weight loss success, however, you need more staying power.
With mock fasting, the body benefits from the advantages of abstaining from food. The cloud: Eating may be nevertheless. That sounds totally practical.

The Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD) was developed in the USA at the Longevity Institute of the University of Southern California under the leadership of the age researcher Valter Longo.

The difference from other types of calorie restriction: mock fasting is not a classic “zero diets” that leaves you starving and in a bad mood.

It is also not comparable with the interval fasting that has become popular in recent years.

One acts namely only in such a way as if one would really fast. The positive effects are said to occur anyway. We asked specialists, what they hold of the chamfering concept.

Five days long apparent fasting

“In mock fasting, you eat about 1,000 calories a day for five days,” says Bernd Kleine-Gunk, president of the German Society for Anti-Aging Medicine. That is “about half as much as normal.”

The diet consists of complex carbohydrates, such as from lettuce and vegetables, healthy fats, such as those found in nuts, avocados, and olive oil, and vegetable protein, such as that found in legumes.

You can eat three times a day.

Knausert is meanwhile with simple coal hydrates such as white rice, bread, and noodles, with sugar and – which may sound unusual for removing and chamfering experienced – with animal protein.

Mock fasting stimulates the cells’ waste disposal system

“Animal protein gives the body the signal growth,” Bernd Kleine-Gunk explains the background of the renunciation. “With the Scheinfasten one would like to cause however the opposite.”

One does not want to “feed” the cells, but to give them a break from the build-up processes. “It is only in this break, in standby mode, that the organism dissolves defective or old cells and recycles their material.”

This process is called autophagocytosis or autophagy. It is based on a kind of internal garbage disposal system of the cell, which causes its renewal or just “rejuvenation”.

According to the anti-aging expert, other positive metabolic processes are set in motion during mock fasting: For example, ketosis, i.e. fat burning.

“The body does not reach the state of ketosis during interval fasting,” says Kleine-Gunk. This is because the body only uses up its carbohydrate stores after longer periods of fasting, and only then does it turn to its fat stores.

For lasting anti-aging effects, the phase of the calorie restriction is thus too short with the interval chamfering.

A typical mock fasting breakfast would be a vegetable smoothie, for example. A cup of coffee is also allowed. For lunch and dinner, vegetable curries with lentils and coconut milk, salads, or soups are served.

In addition, three to four cups of unsweetened tea and water are served throughout the day.

How often you can fast

The 5-day fasting cycle can be repeated approximately every three months. In between, it is recommended to eat according to the so-called Sirtfood principle.

The name is derived from sirtuins, a group of multifunctional enzymes produced by the body. Their activity is to be stimulated by the admission of certain secondary plant materials purposefully.

Who try between the chamfering phases to nourish themselves after this principle, support cell renewal additionally.

Bernd small Gunk speaks of “Sirtuinaktivatoren”. These are contained, for example, in broccoli, kale, apples, blueberries, walnuts, olive oil, onions, turmeric, coffee, and red wine.
