Raw milk can contain bacteria even after it has been removed from the barn without being boiled. It is therefore strongly advised to pasteurize milk before drinking it, especially to protect people who are particularly susceptible to illness.
That’s why you should boil raw milk
Raw milk is considered a special taste experience, particularly warm and milked directly from the animal. Unfortunately, this milk can be contaminated and contain dangerous bacteria.
- Babies, small children, and the elderly are particularly at risk, as are people with a general immune deficiency.
- Salmonella or coli bacteria (EHEC) can be detected in raw milk after milking.
- Heating (pasteurizing) kills these pathogens and the milk can be drunk without hesitation.
- Especially in raw milk from raw milk vending machines, Campylobacter bacteria were increasingly found, which usually cause harmless infections, but can be extremely dangerous for the groups of people mentioned above.
- The general danger of the bacteria is severe vomiting or severe diarrhea, also coupled with a fever. Patients need fluids because of electrolyte depletion and often an antibiotic.
