Brown Sugar vs. White Sugar: Which is Healthier?
- White and brown sugar differ only in taste and production, but not in nutritional content. The two varieties have the same calorie content.
- Contrary to popular belief, brown sugar does not contain significantly more minerals than its white cousin. Of course, there are differences, for example in the potassium content, but these are negligible.
- However, if you appreciate the malty taste of brown sugar, you often have to put up with a shorter sell-by date. Because the white sugar is cleaned very thoroughly, it can be kept almost indefinitely.
- The brown sugar color comes from skipping a purification stage during manufacture.
- White sugar dissolves faster, so it’s better for baking, for example. However, brown sugar looks great as a decoration for your cake.
