Leek or leek is a biennial herbaceous plant. It grows 60-80 centimeters high. It belongs to the lily family. Leeks don’t have bulbs, they have bulbs. Summer leeks have a long white stalk with light green foliage. The winter leek has a short white stem with dark green foliage.
Origin
Leeks come from southern Europe and are considered to be one of the oldest vegetable plants. It was probably already known in ancient Egypt. It was later cultivated in Greece and Rome and then quickly spread throughout Europe. In Germany, leeks have only been known since the time of Charlemagne.

Taste
Leeks have a slightly bitter taste. Breeding has reduced the content of the bitter substance intybin. Therefore, the wedge-shaped removal of the stalk is usually no longer necessary.
Use
Leeks (leeks) can be prepared in many ways, usually they are served boiled or steamed. You can also use it raw in salads. Leeks are great for soups, stews or casseroles. Together with a delicious sauce, it is a great accompaniment to pan-fried dishes. Together with carrots and celery, it is used as a so-called soup green.
Storage
Leeks can be stored in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator for about 5 days. Blanched leeks can be frozen for about 6-8 months.
