Is it still possible to peel and eat carrots with (larger) black spots that are not furry, or is that a type of mold?
The black spots on carrots can be caused by mold. As long as the spots are relatively new, it is sufficient to thoroughly peel or cut away the black spots. If the carrots were bought with black spots and have been sitting around for a while, the mold may have spread and the carrots may taste bitter. These should then be disposed of. This also applies to carrots on which mold is already visible.
The following precautions can be taken to protect carrots from mold growth:
- wash just before use
- from packaging, especially plastic packaging
- store cool
- store in the dark
- cut off the greens of bunched carrots, otherwise the carrots will lose moisture.
