Have a happy start into spring! We show how healthy habits for the body and mind can be built into everyday life. Whether it’s stress relief in the morning or an evening skincare routine: This is how you get rid of bad habits – and soon you’ll be beaming with satisfaction, competing with the sun.

How to harness the power of habit

Do you know that? You have a goal in mind – for example, to do more endurance sports or to get up earlier in the morning to start your everyday life less hectic. At first, you are highly motivated, but after a short time, you fall back into old patterns. You are not alone in this. Especially in stressful situations, desired goals are often put on the back burner. People who find it difficult to successfully implement new resolutions are often trapped in their bad habits and patterns. The good news is that with a little persistence and a few simple tricks, we can all develop new, good habits. What initially sounds boring and theoretical is, according to positive psychology, the key to success. The reason: People make a large part of their day-to-day decisions with the help of automated actions. Very few think about brushing their teeth or combing their hair in the morning. And here’s the crux of the matter: If you manage to carry out a desired goal as an action so naturally that this very action becomes a habit, you can achieve your associated goal with less effort. How does that work? With our tips and impulses. With it you can change old habits – and implement new ones.

Get rid of bad habits – Here’s how

What habits have you been wanting to break for a while? And what healthy and good habits would you like to develop? This can be, for example, fixed morning rituals that you integrate into your everyday life – and that give you strength and energy for the day. Or you are finally dealing with the skincare routine that is perfect for you because you want to take better care of your skin. Whether it’s a relaxed start to the day or extensive facial care, the general rule is: Integrate new habits into your life that are tailored to your needs and serve your goals.

In order to get used to something new, it helps to formulate positive and concrete goals. And it doesn’t matter what it’s about. You can change habits step by step:

  • For example, instead of saying “I don’t want to be so lazy anymore”, say “I want to lead a more active life, exercising two or three times a week is good for me”.
  • Keep practicing positive formulations, for example “I want more time and peace for myself in the morning, getting up earlier helps me with that.” Or: “I want to feel fresh and healthy, my daily skin care in the evening is important to me. It makes me feel fresher and more beautiful.”
  • The next step is to question your previous habits and find out what need you want to meet with it – and how you can use your new, good habit to achieve this. Write down your observations and phrases so you can refer to them again and again. A table can help: Divide these into “previous habit”, “desired goal or need” and “new habit”.

These tips will make it easier for you to replace old behavior with the new one. When you reward yourself for persevering, your brain associates the action with something positive—and you feel good about it. The reward does not have to be spectacular, but it does have to be effective: simply ticking off the task on a checklist already helps to trigger a feeling of satisfaction. Over time, this makes it increasingly easier for you to overcome your weaker self – and your very individual, personally defined “task” becomes a daily habit.

Changing habits – how long does it take?

Scientists estimate that it takes about 90 days for a behavior to become a habit. So if you follow your 10-minute nightly face care routine for three months, this process becomes second nature to you: you don’t think about it anymore. With a little discipline, you can change your behavior over the long term and lead a healthier life. No matter which habit you want to establish, it should do you good – and contribute to your well-being. For example, treat yourself to a weekly relaxation bath to relieve muscle cramps and switch off. A facial massage can also do very well. Or follow the optimal routine to improve your beauty sleep and be more refreshed during the day. You decide which habits you want to change and which new behaviors are right for you. Listen to your needs – and banish bad habits from your everyday life. For more self-care. And more satisfaction.
