Traditional gift for the first visit after a birth
Beat the butter with the sugar, eggs, and finely grated lemon zest until fluffy. Add the lemon juice, candied orange peel, and candied lemon peel. Stir in the flour and aniseed. Preheat the oven to 180°C and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll out the dough about a finger thick and cut out 7-8 cm slices. Place the slices not too close together on the baking sheet and bake for about 12 minutes until light golden brown. This hearty pastry is said to help the mother regain her strength after childbirth. The anise relieves flatulence and has antibacterial, relaxing, and expectorant properties. The active ingredients pass into breast milk, thus protecting the infant from discomfort.
