  • Mushrooms absorb water. This will cause them to go bad faster and lose their flavor. Therefore, you should avoid washing mushrooms with water.
  • For light dirt: Rub off the dirt with a tea towel or kitchen paper.
  • For medium soiling: Rub off the dirt with a damp tea towel or kitchen paper. Unattractive areas can also be completely cut away with a knife.
  • In the case of heavy soiling: Use a mushroom brush to help with cleaning. If you don’t get the dirt off at all, hold the mushrooms in a sieve under running water for a moment. While you should avoid water, at some point you should weigh up whether you’d rather eat aromatic or cleaned mushrooms.
  • Alternative: You can also peel the mushrooms, this saves you cleaning. To do this, you just need to remove the top layer of skin on the mushrooms.
  • You can wash morels thoroughly with water. These are the exception among the mushrooms.

How to store mushrooms

You don’t always have the opportunity to eat the mushrooms directly. Although mushrooms are very delicate, there are ways to keep them safe. Before you store the mushrooms, remember to clean them.

  • Store the mushrooms in the refrigerator, preferably in the vegetable drawer, or in another similarly cool place. Mushrooms can be stored in the fridge for 3 to 4 days.
  • Make sure that the mushrooms are kept in an air-permeable container.
  • Do not put any other food on top of the mushrooms as they bruise easily.
  • You can also freeze or dry the mushrooms if a few days isn’t enough to store the mushrooms.
