Slightly cloudy and a little thicker than water: Coconut water, also known as coconut juice, does not make a particularly spectacular impression at first glance. The drink can provide the minerals calcium, potassium, and phosphorus and has just 12 to 20 calories per 100 ml. Pure coconut water is “tapped” from young, green coconuts – unlike the higher-calorie white coconut milk, which is made from ripe, brown fruits. In contrast to this, coconut water is also characterized by a significantly milder taste. In its pure form, it tastes slightly sour and somewhat sweet.

That promises coconut water

Thanks to the minerals it contains, coconut water is advertised as an isotonic sports drink that not only quenches thirst, but also charges the body’s energy stores. The drink is also hailed as a slimming drink, said to boost metabolism and help with weight loss.

In skin care, coconut water is said to have an antioxidant effect that counteracts skin aging. And even your heart should benefit from the refreshing trend drink, as it is said to lower high blood pressure. But what is really true?

Does the coconut juice keep what it promises?

Coconut water is actually suitable as a sports drink thanks to the minerals it contains. It gives you back some of the minerals you lost through sweating while exercising. So refresh yourself after your next jogging session with an ice-cold glass of the in-drink.

However, the low-calorie liquid alone is not suitable as a slimming aid. You can achieve a positive effect if you consume coconut water instead of high-calorie drinks like lemonade and change your diet at the same time. A real metabolism-promoting influence could also not be proven. The situation is similar with the anti-aging effect, which has not yet been scientifically verified.

Of course, it’s still worth trying out. We recommend spicing up your usual smoothie recipes with coconut water or trying sweet coconut water ice cream with fruit. Delicious!
