Cut onions without crying – here’s how
Onions are healthy, versatile in the kitchen and the ingredient for many good dishes. However, as soon as they are cut or peeled, the cells of the onion release substances that make your eyes water. In nature, these gases are supposed to keep predators away. So that you never shed tears again when chopping onions, we have summarized a few tips for you in this article:
- Before you start chopping the onion, you should moisten your cutting board a little. As a result, fewer irritant gases from the onion can rise upwards.
- Also, run your hands and the knife under cold water. This prevents the release of irritant gases.
- Also, use a sharp knife because you’ll injure fewer bulbous cells and therefore less of the irritating substance will be released.
No more crying while cutting onions
After preparing everything, you can easily process onions without crying with the following tips:
- Breathe only through your mouth and not through your nose. This protects your mucous membranes and keeps your eyes dry. You can also gently pinch your nose if you have to.
- Cut the onion while sitting. In this way, the sulfurous ingredients that rise vertically cannot get into your eyes.
- Fill a bowl with water and peel the onion directly in the water.
- Hold a sip of water in your mouth as you chop onions. Your eyes will no longer water.
- Slice the onion with an open window to allow the irritating fumes to escape. If necessary, switch on your extractor hood.
- Cut off the roots of the onion last, because they contain a lot of the unpleasant gases.
- Chop up onions quickly and without a tear with the right food processor.
