Vegetarian dal with tomatoes, dried chilies and butter

Heat the washed and drained lentils with the garlic, ginger, salt and turmeric in 250ml of water and then simmer for about 30-35 minutes over low to medium heat until soft. If necessary, add a little more water during simmering to prevent the lentils from running dry. Heat the butter in a pan, briefly fry the chili together with the cumin seeds and then add the onions. Once the onions are golden brown, add the tomatoes and fry for a little longer. Finally, add the cooked lentils and continue to simmer for about 5-10 minutes. Serve with naan, roti canai or rice.
