my favorite cookies for 20 years
Chop the dates and hazelnuts. Combine the flour with the baking powder, salt, clove powder, sugar, vanilla sugar, chocolate shavings, butter or clarified butter, and egg. Stir in the dates and nuts and knead. Shape the dough into a log, cut into approximately 1/2 cm thick pieces (coins), and place them on a baking sheet lined with baking paper. Place in a cold oven, set to 180°C (top/bottom heat), 160°C (fan oven), and gas mark 2, and bake for approximately 17 minutes. Bake for each additional baking sheet for approximately 10 minutes. Let the cookies cool on a wire rack. Mix the powdered sugar with the juice or liqueur until smooth, brush the cookies with it, and sprinkle with chopped pistachios, if desired. Note: These are my absolute favorite Christmas cookies! They can also be baked for other occasions. Makes enough for approximately 40 cookies.
