Defrosting in the Oven: You Need to Know That

Defrosting in the oven is generally possible, but usually not the best option. If your device has a defrost function, it is not a problem at all. In ovens without this program, you need to pay attention to various things so that the quality of the food does not suffer.

Defrosting in the oven: not optimal without automatic defrosting

If you have a modern device with automatic defrosting, you can defrost frozen food in it according to the instructions. The situation is different for ovens without this function.

  • Meat: Poultry dries out quickly, while a roast usually already cooks on the outside while it is still frozen on the inside. Wrap the meat in aluminum foil and let it defrost in the oven at 60-70 degrees. The duration depends on the size of the piece. Turn the pieces regularly and check how far the thawing has progressed. Nevertheless, it can happen that the meat becomes tough or that parts are already beginning to cook.
  • Fish: Fish can generally be defrosted in the oven. Since fish cooks faster than meat, you should choose a maximum temperature of 50 degrees and circulating air. Pack the fish and then proceed as described above for the meat.
  • Vegetables: Put the vegetables in a casserole dish. Set the oven to 75 degrees and use convection. The duration of defrosting also depends on the type and size of the vegetables. Check periodically and turn the vegetables until they are thawed.
  • Bread: To defrost bread, rolls or baguettes, set the temperature of the oven to 160 degrees top and bottom heat. Slide the grating into the middle rail. A whole loaf takes about 20 minutes, rolls about 4 minutes and slices of bread are defrosted after about 5 minutes.
  • Cake: Preheat the oven to 30 degrees for a fan oven. Place the baking sheet with the cake on the middle shelf of the oven. Defrosting takes about an hour, depending on the size of the cake.
  • Fruit: Fruit is less suitable for defrosting in the oven. It quickly becomes mushy and also loses vitamins. If you still want to try it, 75 degrees and about 5-10 minutes are enough.

Defrosting without an oven: These methods are more suitable

Basically, defrosting in the oven is an alternative option. It is better to choose one of these variants:

  • Fridge: It may take the longest here, but defrosting in the fridge is gentlest on the food. Place the frozen food in the fridge overnight.
  • Water bath: Another option is thawing in a water bath. This method is suitable for meat, fish, vegetables, and fruits. Ideally, the food is vacuumed. These can be placed in the water bath directly in the packaging.
  • Microwave: A quick method is to defrost in the microwave. The modern devices have a defrosting program that does the work for you. You select the food to be frozen, enter the weight and the microwave calculates the time required. Halfway through the time, you must turn the frozen food.
