You can get citric acid as a powder in all drugstores and supermarkets that have a household goods department. It is also available online. The powder is mixed with water when used for descaling.

  1. Fill the kettle with one liter of water. Add one to two tablespoons of the citric acid powder. Stir the mixture with a long spoon.
  2. Leave the citric acid solution in the kettle to soak in cold for around five hours.

Limescale builds up in a kettle after a while. Especially when the tap water is very hard, the household appliance should be descaled more often. Citric acid is also suitable for this.

  • It is important that you do not heat the citric acid solution inserted into the kettle. If you ignore this information and boil the solution, the deposited lime combines with the citric acid to form a calcium citrate complex.
  • This hardens so much that you can no longer remove the hardening and have to buy a new device. Therefore, make sure that you only use citric acid as a solution when it is cold, at most lukewarm.
