Dispose of frying oil – environmentally friendly and correctly

Anyone who owns their own deep fryer and uses it regularly should also ensure that the oil is disposed of correctly. Incorrectly disposed of deep-frying fat can lead to problems and contamination, so you avoid unnecessary additional work:

  • Drain: Never dispose of your cooking oil down the sink or toilet drain. The grease can build up in pipes and clog the drain over time. It can also damage the pipes in the sewer system and lead to cracks.
  • Bottling: Fill the lukewarm fat into old jars and seal them properly. This allows you to dispose of the leftovers in the black bin, the residual waste bin. However, this is only advisable for small quantities.
  • Paper: Allow the fat to cool properly and wrap in newspaper or cardboard. In this form, it can also be disposed of with household waste. This variant is proposed by the Bund Naturschutz as the best solution.
  • Recycling center: You can hand in large quantities of grease residue to the recycling center in your city or municipality. It is important that you hand over the leftovers in pure form and not packed in glass containers or the like. This allows the fat to be reused in other areas.
  • When: Dispose of the old grease after a maximum of eight uses or 20 hours of use. However, it is advisable to pay attention to your own perception. If the fat smells bad or looks anything but appealing, it is best to dispose of it immediately.
  • Tip: If you filter the frying oil after use, it will last longer. Run it through a sieve at a low residual temperature and discard the leftover food. A coffee filter can also suffice for filtering.
