Do Frozen Peas Need to Be Cooked?

Spread the love

Can I eat peas raw or are they poisonous?

Peas are an exception among legumes: you can eat them raw.  It makes no difference whether the peas are fresh or frozen.

However, large amounts of raw peas should not be eaten. Due to the indigestible fiber, they are better tolerated in cooked form than raw.

Other legumes such as beans, chickpeas or lentils should not be eaten raw because they contain phasin. This substance can cause severe gastrointestinal upset and cause red blood cells to clump together. Phasin is inactivated by boiling.
