Over time, negative stress can actually make you fat. This is partly due to a change in eating behavior as a result, but also to a change in metabolism in the event of stress. Those who are under high pressure over a long period of time tend to eat infrequently and prefer quick, high-calorie meals. Also, stressed people rarely sit down to focus on and enjoy their food. Instead, they eat snacks at their desks or while walking. They often skip breakfast or lunch and eat more late at night or at night.

In addition, stress releases certain hormones, particularly cortisol, which affect metabolism. The burning of fat is slowed down, and the fat deposits accumulate, especially on the stomach. Due to the stress-related hormone release, those affected also suffer from food cravings – especially for sweets and greasy foods. When you are stressed, not only are you taking in more calories, you are also burning fewer calories. And it is precisely by this principle that one gains weight and becomes fat.

Another factor comes into play when someone is one of the so-called frustration eaters. Some people eat not only when they are hungry, but especially when they are not feeling well. If you eat chocolate, chips and the like to cope with stress, you will inevitably increase your calorie intake. This can eventually lead to a vicious circle when those affected gain weight for this reason and in turn reach for sweets and greasy snacks out of frustration.

So if you want to lose weight or prevent weight gain, it’s important to reduce stress first. Plan conscious breaks for this, build as much exercise as possible into your everyday life. For example, walk or cycle part of your commute. Take the stairs instead of the elevator and get outside for some fresh air during your lunch break. Also, don’t skip meals or eat them at your desk or on the go, just enjoy your food. This way you will notice faster when you are full. Instead of eating high-calorie snacks, you should eat pieces of fruit or vegetables and drink plenty of water. Ideally, you should take care of sporting activities in your free time, especially if you have an office job.

However, some people eat too few calories when they are stressed, develop nutrient deficiencies and lose weight to a greater or lesser extent.
